How to change your default browser to safari

It might not be as popular as Mozilla or Google Chrome, but Apple's native browser Mobile Safari is fastly becoming a major player in the Internet game thanks to the significant sales of iPads and iPhones. However, despite the several iOS exclusive features, there are iPhone and iPad owners interested in changing MobileSafari as default browser with a more familiar or functional option. Take for instance, Skyfire, a next-generation, cloud-based video optimization and mobile browsing solution for iPhone, iPad and Android.

Regardless however of your reasons to change Mobile Safari, the following is a tutorial that helps you do exactly that. Before getting started, you need to jailbreak your device. If you haven't performed the jailbreak of your iPhone/iPad, just check out the designated category on our website. You will find jailbreak tutorials and solutions that are easy to follow.

Step 1
Tap the  Cydia app icon on your iPhone's/iPad's SpringBoard.

Step 2
The first window of Cydia will display several options and tabs. You need to select the "Sections" tab at the bottom of the first screen/window.

Step 3
In the "Sections" menu, go down the page and select "Tweaks". This will display a list of all tweaks available alphabetically. Find in the list, then select the "Browser Changer" tweak.

Step 4
Press "Install", then tap "Confirm" in the prompted status message at the top of the screen to have the "Browser Changer" tweak installed on your device.

Step 5
After Cydia has finished the installation process of the "Browser Changer" iOS tweak tap the large button that reads "Restart SpringBoard".

Step 6
When the SpringBoard restart is completed, select the Settings icon on your desktop. In the prompted menu, select the "Browser Changer" feature and simply select a new default browser of your choice. The iOs tweak features a long list of browsers such as Opera Mini, Skyfire, Vanilla Surf, Mercury Pro and so on.

If you're interested in changing Mobile Safari as your default to get rid of the bugs, you should consider upgrading your firmware to a newer version. Apple has improved its native browser with every iOS release, although in terms of functionality and popularity, Mobile Safari has a long way to go before actually competing with the likes of Google Chrome and Mozilla.

You can find a comprehensive list of all bug reports users have flagged for Apple's Mobile Safari on iPad and iPhone in the Software section of the www.iJailbreakiPhone5s.com.

How to Install Siri on a Jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch

One of the first questions iPhone users ask before or after performing a jailbreak process pertains to Siri. Many want to know if they can still use Siri on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch and the good news for those still running 5.0 and 5.0.1 and earlier is that the tweak for it is quite hassle-free to install and use. The solution to install Siri on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch is known as Spire.

Spiri is a new hack for jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to run Siri, the voice assistant. The hack is compatible with jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPod Touch 4th generation and iPad 1. Created by Ryan Petrich and Chpwn, this hack will allow you to enter your own proxy server address to obtain files required by Apple to grant you the authorization to use Siri.

The Siri hack “uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts”. Cpwn, the developer, explains that the app directs “all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server”.

To install Siri on your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch you need to get a proxy. Chpwn has provided several ideas on how to do that, including owning an iPhone 4S or using a friend’s authentication tokens for iPhone 4S.

Another solution if you want a voice assistant like Siri on your jailbroken device is to replace Siri and try a similar service like Google Chrome’s speech API via the tweaks  NowNow or Activoice. This is also the case if you’re running a more recent iOS firmware such as 5.1 or 6.x.

Spiri, the hack for Siri is available for free in the Cydia app store and takes only 100 MB.

How to Fix Cydia Errors on iPhone

How to Fix Cydia Errors on iPhone
The first time an error message comes from Cydia, a lot of users tend to freak out. But as it turns out, most Cydia errors on iPhone, iPod and iPad can be fixed without much hassle. It’s easy to understand why many users believe that’s the error that will be unsolvable since Cydia isn’t that easy to get along with, particularly when jailbreaking isn’t quite your most common activity. And errors do tend to surface, since many users will install data packages and tweaks that aren’t quite compatible with the jailbreak version, iOS or device.

Some of the most common Cydia error messages are also some of the easiest to fix. Oftentimes users will report getting the following error messages from Cydia: “I wasn’t able to locate file for the sbsettings package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package” and “netdb: open nodename nor servname provided, or not known”. Obviously these are not the kind of things most people would know about.
There are three ways to fix Cydia errors on iPhone, iPod and iPad that will remove most glitches:

Method No. 1

Launch Cydia from your device and tap Refresh (it’s on the top left). Wait for the app to download and reload data and then just try to install a package.

Method No. 2

Open Cydia, select Manage > Sources and then Edit to remove all third-party repositories. The general advice is to avoid the removal of the default repositories: BigBoss, Cydia/Telesphoreo, ZodTTD/MacCiti, Dev Team and ModMyi.

Method No. 3

If previous methods have failed to solve the Cydia errors then just reboot your iPhone, iPad or iPod and launch Cydia again.

If none of the above methods to fix Cydia glitches delivers the expected results, then it means you will need a more specific method to handle the problem. You will find a list of the bugs and their fixes in the Tutorials category available on the website.

How to Exit Safe Mode on Your iPhone

One of the most common issues users have with their iDevice is exiting Safe Mode. That happens when their iPhone or iPad’s SpringBoard is crashing. Oftentimes this is also caused by a new app or software installed that isn’t compatible with your firmware or settings. This is sometimes the case for jailbroken devices.

First of all you need to understand what Safe Mode is. iPhone enters in Safe Mode to prevent a permanent crash cycle. It also gives the user a chance to remove an issue that causes malfunction without the need to perform a full restore of your device. In most cases, Safe Mode is a temporary glitch that can commonly be fixed by tapping Restart. That should exit you out of Safe Mode and solve the problem.

If the Restart doesn’t fix the SpringBoard crash, it might be caused by an incompatibility with one of the tweaks installed. Also check to make sure the tweak is compatible with the firmware you are running. If you suspect a certain tweak just uninstall that to exit Safe Mode. But since it’s hard to know for sure which is the tweak or package causing the error, open Cydia, select Manage and then Packages. Start by checking the info available for every installed tweak and find which is not compatible. Use Cydia to remove the problematic tweak.

For a fresh start you can remove all installed tweaks. Do that by uninstalling Mobile Substrate in Cydia. Once they have been removed, you can always reinstall your favorite tweaks, but this time be sure to check compatibility and safety. Download tweak packages from the likes of BigBoss, Cydia/Telesphoreo, ZodTTD/MacCiti and ModMyi.

Troubleshooting: How to Fix a Frozen iPhone

It might be just as powerful and fast as a state-of-the-art computer, but your beloved iPhone is predisposed to some frustrating issues. More often than not, your iPhone becomes unresponsive. It’s a frustrating issue and a restart commonly cuts it, but what about when you’re dealing with a frozen iPhone and the home and sleep keys are experiencing glitches. So what do you do to fix a frozen iPhone besides performing a full Restore in iTunes?

First of all you need to know what kind of operations can freeze your iPhone. Some apps and widgets could require so much of your iPhone that it will stop responding to touchscreen gestures. Sometimes even displaying a sizeable webpage or loading a video can impact with the smartphone’s performance. Other times you’ll have to handle a black screen issue, although you haven’t turned off your device. Experts say that this is something a dead battery could cause.

To unfreeze your iPhone start by performing a simple reset and see if the Home button works. Also try to turn it off and on again. If that doesn’t work you will have to perform a hard reset.

To perform a hard reset on your iPhone, hold the sleep/wake button and the home button at the same time. Do that until the iPhone’s screen turns black. Sometimes you need to do it until after the red power off slider shows up. Wait for the white Apple logo to appear, then stop holding the buttons and wait for the iPhone to finish the reboot.

If those don’t work, it’s time to restore your iPhone to a safe firmware. By performing a restore, your iPhone will be cleaned of any software bugs, but that means the smartphone will be taken back to default factory settings. However, while this is a great solution to fix software glitches it also removes all of your apps, documents, pictures, music and so on.

All you have to do to restore the iPhone is to connect the device to the computer and sync data. Select your iPhone in the list of devices prompted in the left column, then click on the Restore option in the Summary.

How to Fix the iOS 6.1 Microsoft Exchange Bug

Apple’s iOS 6 might give users 200 new features, but updates to more recent versions of the software are causing tons of bugs. One of them is the Microsoft Exchange bug for which Apple announced an upcoming fix. While you’re waiting for Apple’s software update, here’s how to fix the iOS 6.1 Microsoft Exchange bug.

Earlier this month, Apple had to issue a new software update for 6.1 on iPhone 4S that caused 3G performance problems after two European mobile operators Vodafone UK and 3 Austria even advised iPhone 4S users against upgrading to iOS 6.1. The Microsoft Exchange bug however is drawing a lot of scrutiny since enterprise users can’t go back to iOS 6.0 and remove the problem fully.
iOS 6.1 Microsoft Exchange Bug

It wasn’t until just recently that Apple identified the cause of the Microsoft Exchange bug and announced a fix is in the works. “When you respond to an exception to a recurring calendar event with a Microsoft Exchange account on a device running iOS 6.1, the device may begin to generate excessive communication with Microsoft Exchange Server” reads the Apple Support page. The Exchange Server bug might also cause increased network activity or impact the battery life of your iDevice and eventually ends up blocking up the device.

So while you’re waiting for Apple to fix the Microsoft Exchange bug, you can avoid any other problems, by disabling and re-enabling the Exchange calendar on your iPhone and iPad. First of all go to “Settings”, select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” and tap on the Exchange account available in your device’s list. Turn off the Calendars switch, wait about ten seconds and then turn it back on.

The Microsoft Exchange bug isn’t the only problem iOS 6 users are dealing with. There’s also the Lock Screen vulnerability that gives immediate access to everything on your iPhone, including photos, iMessages and FaceTime.

iOS 6.1 Glitch Lets You Bypass iPhone Lockscreen Password

bypass iPhone 5 Pass Code
If other iOS 6 bugs are just making it harder for you to enjoy a great piece of technology, a new iOS 6.1 glitch actually exposes your private data. A YouTube video shows a tutorial that uses a iOS 6.1 glitch that lets you bypass the iPhone lockscreen password.

The Verge and Apple Insider used the steps in the YouTube video to test the iPhone lockscreen password glitch. Sure, the actual procedure is to some extent a bit uncommon, but it still gives straightforward access to your private data. Watch the video or follow these steps to test the iOS 6.1 Lockscreen glitch.

Step 1

Lock your device then slide to unlock

Step 2

Hold the sleep button until the device prompts for power down. Tap Cancel and then wait for the status bar to turn blue. Type an emergency number, tap Call and cancel it immediately, before it connects.

Step 3

Press the sleep button to lock the device and then turn it on by pressing the home button.

Step 4

Unlock your device by slide-to-unlock, hold the sleep/wake button and 3 seconds later tap Emergency Call button.

This will open your device and give you access to several private areas of your iPhone, including iMessages, FaceTime,. Photos, voicemail, call list, emails and contacts. YouTube users said they were able to replicate the iOS 6 hack on iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4.

It’s not the only iOS 6.1 problem users have reported and since the procedure involves an aborted emergency call, the actual passcode screen and pressing the home button and the power button at the same time, Apple isn’t exactly prioritizing this. “Apple takes user security very seriously. We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update” reads the company’s statement.

This is also not the first time the iPhone lock screen glitch is reported. In 2011, researchers bypassed iPhone’s lock screen password in six minutes using a hack that gave them access to every single feature of the device.

Time to Update iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1.1

update iphone 4 to ios 6.1.1
Last month, Apple has released iOS 6.1.1 which most iPhone 5 users already installed. However, iPhone 4S owners have been experiencing problems with 3G. Last night, Apple released a firmware version that fixes the bugs, so it’s time to update iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1.1.

iOS 6 is not compatible with all Apple devices, but who could have imagined even iPhone 4S would experience glitches with the new firmware? It wasn’t until just recently that iPhone 4S owners started experiencing 3G performance issues and extensive battery drain. Users began complaining even about overheating problems after they have installed the iOS 6.1 firmware.

Vodafone even released a warning about the potential 3G bugs. “While Apple’s investigations continue, we would recommend that anyone who has not yet installed iOS 6.1 on their iPhone 4S should delay doing so until Apple has confirmed that the problem has been fixed” reads Vodafone’s statement released last Friday. According to the phone carrier, “some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts o to connect to the Internet”.

Even some businesses have warned employees about updating to iOS 6.1 because it caused excessive logging issues when connected to an Exchange server. Several sources have confirmed the issue. “I had a user upgrade to 6.1 and immediately after he finished, his phone/IPAD started causing excessive logging on the exchange server. I found the problem by using exmon and saw the CPU utilization in conjunction with high session count” reads a bug report on Microsoft Technet.

“This update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S” reads Apple’s announcement about the 6.1.1 update for iOS. Following Apple’s iOS update for iPhone 4S, Vodafone made a second announcement, advising users to download the latest version “as soon as you can as this will deal with these issues”.

How to Fix Most Common Evasi0n Jailbreak Bugs

Although the Evad3rs team has delivered the fix countless iPhone 5, 4S and iPad owners waited for months, there’s still a sort of disbelief and uncertainty going around. First of all it is the warning we’ve learned to heed over the past few years and that is to be weary of first-time jailbreakers. Still, Evasi0n is the work of reputable hackers and longtime iOS jailbreak developers.
evasion jailbreak bugs

Their tool performs an untethered jailbreak on your A5 device and gives you the ability to take your iOS device to the next level. Still, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so we’ve prepared a list of the most common Evasi0n jailbreak bugs and their fixes. Just in case your jailbreak doesn’t perform with flying colors.

Cydia might appear tiny after rebooting, also called the quarter screen bug. That might be caused by an incompatibility with iOS 6 that causes problems only after the reboot. You need to uninstall any tweak that is not compatible with iOS 6. You have to go to the package page in Cydia, select Change Package Settings and switch on the “Show All Changes” feature. Here is the full list of tweaks that might cause the quarter screen bug.

If your device is stuck at the Apple logo following the jailbreak, just perform a hard reboot until it reboots. Do that by holding down the lock/sleep button and home button at the same time.

Another common bug with the Evasi0n jailbreak impacts Winterboard notifications. Notifications might not show up on the device’s lockscreen when a lockscreen HTML theme is enabled. For that developers still don’t have a fix.

You might get 500 error messages such as “host unreachable”, “hash sum mismatch”. According to the Q&A evasi0n help page, this just means the Cydia Store system and its repositories are dealing with a lot of traffic. Just be patient and retry the jailbreak procedure.

How to Fix the Cydia Quarter Screen Bug after the Evasi0n Jailbreak

For the most part a jailbreak process works successfully, but there are some cases when certain incompatibilities mess it up, creating later on errors and all kinds of bugs. Evasi0n is the latest jailbreak tool to join the list of tools that break Apple’s iOS and that means there’s a list of new jailbreak bugs and errors that may take a hit at your device. One of the most common post Evasi0n jailbreak errors is the Cydia quarter screen bug. Here’s how to fix it.

Users that have performed jailbreaks on both iPhone and iPad have red flagged an issue with Cydia following the Evasi0n hack. Cydia is now showing up tiny after rebooting. There are several tweaks that might affect Cydia’s functionality, but the main problem is that your device is running apps and software that aren’t compatible with iOS 6.

The list is quite significant, but the most often incompatible tweaks behind the Cydia quarter screen bug are the Deck, an old version of Transparency or an old version of RetinaPad. Although Winterboard and UIKit Tools are compatible with iOS 6 upgrading or installing these items might activate the Cydia bug.

However, the list of possible incompatible tweaks is quite long and goes beyond what you’d think off beforehand. Consult the entire list here. Some of the items in the list may not still apply since developers release updates of their software quite often.

If you’re looking for a temporary fix for the Cydia quarter screen bug, you can restore the app’s functionality by respringing. However, this is only temporary and the problem will not go away until you remove incompatible tweaks.

To fix the Cydia quarter screen bug, you have to manually uninstall any of the tweaks that might be incompatible with iOS 6. You will do that by first putting your iDevice into Safe Mode with SBSSettings (tap the Power button in its menu) or reboot while holding the volume up button.

To find out when your incompatible tweaks are scheduled for update, you can go to the package page in Cydia, select the “Change Package Settings” and then turn on the “Show All Changes” button, which will let you see upgrades to the package although it is not installed.

Until the app says so, don’t touch your iPhone 5.

Step Five

Evasi0n will then ask you to “unlock your device and tap the new Jailbreak icon”. You only have to tap on it once, which will make your device’s screen go black and then display the home screen.

Step Six

The jailbreak tool will now start injecting final jailbreak data on your iPhone 5.

Step Seven

Evasi0n will announce the jailbreak is complete, but don’t fret if your device restarts a few time before Cydia appears on your iPhone 5’s SpringBoard.

Evasi0n Step-by-Step Untethered Jailbreak Guide for iPhone 5, iOS 6 on Windows

The Evad3rs team released just a few days ago the iOS 6 untethered jailbreak tool for iPhone 5. If you haven’t performed the jailbreak yet, here’s a guide that explains every step of the process. It’s basically just as hassle-free as previous jailbreak tools, so you won’t need extensive hacker skills or software development knowledge.

The following is an evasi0n step-by-step untethered jailbreak tutorial for iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1.0 via a Windows system. Before anything else, make sure you perform a backup of your iPhone 5 as well as save your device’s SHSH blobs.

Step One

Step Two

The evasi0n jailbreak app will first ask you to connect your iPhone 5 via USB to your Windows computer. Before connecting your smartphone to the computer, remove lock screen passcodes and wait for the jailbreak tool to recognize your iPhone model and iOS version. Click on the “Jailbreak” button when you’re ready.

Step Three

Evasi0n will now perform the actual jailbreak and will run the following stages: generate jailbreak data, inject stage 1 jailbreak data, reboot the device, wait for the device to be ready, inject stage 2 jailbreak data, upload Cydia and upload the Cydia packages list. Just don’t touch your device during the process.

Step Four

Unlock your device, tap the “Jailbreak” app icon just once. Don’t get worried and don’t touch your device: the app will open and close right away, also the screen will go black and then return to the home screen.

Step Five

Evasi0n will inject the remount payload, remount the root filesystem, prepare the final jailbreak data, inject the final jailbreak data. Be patient for the jailbreak tool to do its thing and don’t tap the icon again.

Step Six

Before the Cydia icon will appear on your iPhone 5’s SpringBoard, the smartphone may restart several times.

Where to Find your iPhone’s Firmware and Baseband Version

find iPhone’s Firmware and Baseband Version
It might not be exactly what you’d commonly want to know about your iPhone, but learning what’s your iDevice’s firmware and baseband version is necessary if you’re planning a jailbreak, an unlock or a firmware upgrade.

Firmware files for iPhone and all other iDevices are commonly publicly available and they will work if your device was never jailbroken before. However, unless the jailbreak guide states otherwise, make sure you use legit and official direct links to firmware upgrade files provided by reputable sources.

First of all you need to know the current firmware and baseband version of your iPhone. For that you have to go to your iPhone’s Settings menu, select General, then About. The next window will display several general details of your device, including firmware and baseband. Just look under the Version and Modern Firmware tabs to retrieve that information.

Updating your iDevice to a new firmware can be done via iTunes or via wireless. But the last one is available only for devices running iOS 5 and higher. Avoid downloading the firmware using a 3G/4G internet connection because it will significantly drain up your monthly data plan, not to mention the download will take a lot longer than via Wi-Fi.  Also make sure your device is fully charged, since the download and firmware upgrade will impact battery life and interrupting the process isn’t recommended.

You can download iPhone firmware files as early as 1.0.0 and as new as 6.1.0 from the iClarified website here. Just make sure you have disabled the auto unzip feature in the Safari browser. If you’re using Internet Explorer to download iOS firmware files, change the browser’s default zip extension to .ipsw. You don’t have to unzip the file first, just rename the zip archive into .ipsw.

Once you have downloaded the desired firmware file, iTunes will give you two options: Restore or Update. Remember to use the Restore button if you’re jailbreaking, so you’ll cut the risk of something going wrong.

Jailbreak 5.1.1 on iPhone 4 using Redsn0w and Mac

There are many perks to jailbreaking your iPhone 4, regardless of the OS it is currently running on. The following is a tutorial to help you jailbreak 5.1.1 on iPhone 4 using the Redsn0w tool and a Mac computer. Do not attempt to jailbreak iOS 6 with this jailbreak tool. Check out the News and Tutorial sections for the untethered iOS 6 jailbreak guide.

Before anything else make sure you have saved your device’s SHSH blobs and have performed a recent backup. The following steps include using the Redsn0w jailbreak tool as well as upgrading your baseband which might make it impossible or difficult to unlock the device later on.

Step 1
Go to your Mac’s desktop and create a folder you will name Pwnage. Download the latest version of Redsn0w from the Redmond Pie website, download the 5.1.1 firmware and move both files in the Pwnage folder. You don’t have to download the 5.1.1 firmware if your device already runs it.

Step 2

Extract the Redsn0w zip file and launch the .exe file in the unzipped folder. Click the Jailbreak button in the prompted version. There’s a chance the software will ask you which jailbreak method to use. The preferred method is the DFU RAM Disk method, so click Yes to select it when prompted this message: “Use DFU ramdisk method?”

Step 3

It’s time to turn off your device and plug it into the computer. Click Next when you have done this and prepare to follow Redsn0w’s guidelines to enter into DFU mode.

Step 4

The jailbreak tool will send your iPhone into reboot mode and then prepare the final steps of the process. When it’s done “preparing jailbreak data”, you will be prompted a new window where you have to select Cydia in the list of options and then Next.

Step 5

Your iPhone will reboot again while Redsn0w will start uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel. When the jailbreak is done, Redsn0w will inform you and once the iPhone finishes the reboot process some 5 minutes later the Cydia icon will appear on the SpringBoard.

Tutorial to Downgrade iPhone 3GS from iOS 6 to iOS 5 with Redsn0w and Windows

Apple’s iOS 6 has 200 new features that are quite appealing for the user always looking for the next big thing. However, if for some reasons you want to downgrade to iOS 5, here is a short tutorial to help you do that the right way. Remember though that to perform this process you should have saved your device’s SHSH blobs before upgrading your firmware. The following guide to downgrade iPhone 3GS from iOS 6 to iOS 5 uses Redsn0w, a Windows PC and SHSH blobs.

Step 1
On your PC’s desktop create a folder which you will name Pwnage. Go to the official Redmond Redsn0w website and download the most recent version of the software. Move the downloaded files in the Pwnage folder. Do the same for the iOS version you want to restore as well as for the iOS you are currently running.

Step 2

In the Pwnage folder, extract the Redsn0w zip file. Go to the extracted folder and launch the redsn0w.exe file. It’s advised you launch this operation in Administrator mode.

Step 3

Redsn0w will prompt a window with two options: Jailbreak and Extras. Select Extras > Even More (Device info, IPSW restores, and more). Now click Restore “to an iPSW, with support for saved blobs and downgrades”.

Step 4

In the Restore Menu, select the IPSW feature and then choose the IPSW you want to restore to from the prompted list. Click Open to upload the firmware.

Step 5

The Redsn0w software will prompt the following message: “redsn0w can modify this IPSW during the restore to prevent the baseband from being updated. Would you like redsn0w to do this?”. Click Yes.

Step 6

You will have to enter your device in DFU mode. Click OK when prompted this message. Then turn off your iPhone, connect your device and then click Next. Follow Redns0w’s guide to enter the DFU mode.

Step 7

Redsn0w will do most of the work by itself, including checking Cydia for saved SHSH blobs. You can try the Remote option to try again if the software can’t find the blobs automatically. You can also select the Local button if you have SHSH blobs saved on your computer.

Step 8

Redsn0w will operate a system restore image and then restore your iPhone to the new firmware. The software will announce you when the firmware downgrade is complete.

Jailbreak iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4th Generation iOS 6.0.1 with Redsn0w

Apple’s iOS 6 has 200 new features that have swept most iPhone owners off their feet. And it’s hard not to, in the end with Apple it’s all about having the latest new thing. Unfortunately for iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S owners upgrading their firmware to iOS 6 means losing the perks of a jailbroken device. However, if you have an iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod Touch 4th generation and you have upgraded to iOS 6.0.1, the good news is you can jailbreak your device.

Redmond released the Redsn0w jailbreak for iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation iOS 6.0.1 as of last year, but remember like many other early jailbreaks, this one is also limited to a tethered boot and to iDevices prior to A5. If you want to jailbreak iPhone 5 running iOS 6 don’t attempt to use this software version. Stay current with the jailbreak news in the dedicated section on our website.

Remember this is a tethered jailbreak which means you will have to reboot your device into tethered mode to launch Cydia and other jailbreak apps. Redmond recommends to connect your iPhone to your PC and start Redsn0w when it begins to lose power, then select Extras in the main window and click on the Just Boot function.

Step 1

Download iOS 6 (most recent version) and update the firmware on your iDevice.

Step 2

Download Redsn0w, the latest version and run the .exe file.

Step 3

Launching the Redsn0w jailbreak tool and click Extras first, select IPSW and manually select the original iOS 6 file and not the latest beta version of the firmware (iOS 6.1 beta 1).

Step 4

Click Jailbreak in the main window of the Redsn0w jailbreak tool, click Next and select Cydia.

Step 5

Enter your iPhone in DFU mode. There is a tutorial on how to do that available in the tutorial section on our website.

Step 6

The jailbreak software will do the whole work by itself. Redsn0w will use the Limera1n exploit to jailbreak and install Cydia on pre-A5 devices. Select “Autoboot this device when it connects in DFU mode” so that the iPhone restarts in tethered boot mode.

How to Save SHSH Blobs with Redsn0w and Cydia

In a previous post we have discussed what are iPhone SHSH blobs and what are they good for. To remember you, SHSH blobs should be saved before upgrading to a newer iOS version in case you ever want to restore a previous firmware. For people who have upgraded to iOS 6 and have saved their iPhone’s SHSH blobs, they will be able to restore iOS 5 and enjoy a jailbroken device until developers launch the A5 jailbreak.

SHSH blobs are signatures for firmware released by Apple for all devices since iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G and Apple TV 2G. If you don’t have a saved such signature before upgrading to a new iOS it will be impossible to restore your device to an older version. There are several ways to find and/or save your SHSH blobs automatically, but the best way to do it is to install Redsn0w’s Cydia, which will record all SHSH blobs every time you launch the app.

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to backup and save iPhone SHSH blobs using: Redsn0w’s Cydia and a Windows computer.

Step 1

Go to your computer’s desktop and create a folder called Pwnage. Download Redsn0w 0.9.9b1, place it in the Pwnage folder and extract the zip file in the very same folder. Launch the redsn0w .exe file you find in the extracted folder. It is advised you run the application in Administrator Mode for Windows 7.

Step 2

In the window that opens select the Extras button, instead of Jailbreak. You will be prompted to a list of extras featuring several options. In this case you need to click the SHSH blobs button.

Step 3
The SHSH blobs button will open a new menu that features several options related to these firmware signatures. Click Fetch to retrieve “whatever blobs are on the device and submit them to the Cydia server”.

Step 4
Next step requires you to connect your iPhone. Turn it off before clicking the Next button. This is the first step to enter the device in DFU mode. Follow the steps requested when displayed:
Hold down the Power (corner) button for 2 seconds
Without releasing the Power button, also hold down the Home (bottom center) button for 8 seconds
Without releasing the Home button, release the Power button but keep holding the Home button for 15 seconds

Step 5
The steps you just followed will send your iPhone in reboot mode. Wait for your device to finish the reboot. Once that’s done, Redsn0w will begin the actual process of fetching the iPhone SHSH blobs and send them to Cydia and its servers.

Step 6
If the process was a success, you will see a message that reads “Cydia server accepted x blobs pulled from this device”, and information about your device. Click Back in that window.

Step 7
In the prompted window, click on the SHSH blobs button and then Query to verify if Cydia saved the data.

Step 8
Into the ECID textfield, enter * and click OK to check everything. Once this process is done, Redsn0w will connect to Cydia and display your saved SHSH blobs. You can also find SHSH blobs in a file within the Redsn0w folder.

Step by Step Guide to Jailbreak iPhone 4S/4 iOS 5.1.1 on iPhone Using Absinthe 2.0 with Windows

Many iPhone users don’t want to jailbreak their devices, fearing the hands-on procedure might be too complicated or risky. The matter of the fact is that today’s jailbreak tools are as easy to install and use as any other app, and will not require extensive hacking knowledge or being an IT expert. It’s really as easy as Absinthe’s makers say it is: your grandmother could do it.

The following step-by-step guide explains how to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 on an iPhone using Chronic Dev-Team’s untethered jailbreak Absinthe 2.0 and a Windows-based laptop or computer. Remember this jailbreak tool will not work with iOS 6. Check out the News and Announcement pages to see when our team experts will be ready to release the iJailbreakiPhone5s software that pertains to A5 devices running the latest firmware from Apple.

Step 1

Before anything else, backup your device. There is a slightly risk you might lose Camera Roll during the jailbreak process. Camera roll is where your photos will be stored after you take a picture with your iPhone, iPad and iPad touch. We have a tutorial on how to backup your iPhone data before a jailbreak available in the guides and tutorials section.

Step 2

Download Absinthe from a certified source like this one. Choose the most recent version that is compatible with your device, iOS version and Windows or Mac. Extract the downloaded files  and open the .exe file (absinthe-win-2.0.exe) which will in turn create a new folder “absinthe-win-2.0”. In this newly created folder, select the .exe file and launch it.

Step 3

The launched application will display a window requiring you to plug in your iPhone so the jailbreak process can start. Don’t forget to remove any passcodes and other VPN settings before clicking the “Jailbreak” button.

Step 4

Clicking on the “Jailbreak” button, prompts Absinthe 2.0 to take over for you and beginning the actual untethered jailbreak. It may take a while, since the app is performing several processes and will wait for your iPhone to finish the reboot.

Step 5

The Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak tool will announce when the procedure is done. It a few moments, a Cydia icon will appear on your Springboard.

How to Jailbreak iPhone 4S, 5.1.1 iOS Using Redsn0w and a Windows PC

This step-by-step guide will work only for the iPhone 4S running 5.1.1 iOS, via Redsn0w and a Windows PC. If you run into problems, check that you are running 5.1.1 and not iOS 6 and remember unlocking and jailbreaking are different processes with different outcomes so make sure you know what you want. The jailbreak for iOS 6 on iPhone 5 and 4S is currently under development. Stay tuned for updates on jailbreaking iOS 6.

Before starting the actual untethered jailbreak process for 5.1.1 iOS on iPhone 4S, with Reds0w (Cydia) via a Windows PC, it is advised you back up your iPhone SHSH Blobs (there is a tutorial for that on our website). SHSH Blobs are needed if you want to unlock your devices later on, and since upgrading to iOS 5.1.1 means updating baseband, SHSH Blobs could be impacted.

Step 1

Go your Windows PC’s desktop and create a folder you will name Pwnage. Download the most recent version of Redsn0w, download 5.1.1 and place all these files in the Pwnage folder on your desktop. Double click on the Redsn0w zipe file and extract it.

Step 2
This step is a must only if you haven’t already upgraded to iOS 5.1.1 and teaches you how to download and install the firmware. Connect your iPhone to the computer, launch iTunes, find and select your device in the list on the left, press Shift on your keyboard and then click Restore  button. In the Pwnage folder on your desktop, select the 5.1.1 firmware ipsw file, click Choose and iTunes will update your device to this iOS version.

Step 3

Again in the Pwnage folder, you have to launch the Redsn0w app file (right click on .exe, select Run as Administrator in the menu that opens). Click the Jailbreak button when Redsn0w launches, which will then install Cydia for you.

Step 4

Lay back and let Redsn0w and the Rocky Racoon work their magic. It will go through three stages, which don’t require any action from you. The Windows jailbreak wizard will run by itself through preparing, processing and finishing up. Once it has completed the process, Redsn0w will let you know if it was a success, while Windows will display the following message: “Jailbreak was successfully installed. Please leave device alone until it reboots on its own. After Cydia appears, please wait for one final respring to happen”.
