Evad3rs’ PlanetBeing Explains Why Jailbreaking is Safer than Rooting

For most of the one-time and beginner jailbreakers it’s hard to feel safe employing hacks on their personal and beloved iDevice. Knowing which is which and understanding how a jailbreak works, seems quite difficult for the user who isn’t tech savvy. One of the aspects more important is a jailbreak’s safety. Evad3rs’ PlanetBeing explained in a AMA session on Reddit why jailbreaking is safer than rooting.

A few days ago, one of the developers of the evasi0n jailbreak sat down with Reddit users in an Ask Me Anything session. Topics ranged from the future of jailbreak to particular aspects of the procedure as well as bugs and safety issues. One user asked a question that many iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users have dealt with when considering a jailbreak procedure.

“Why is jailbreaking safer than rooting? When I do research on rooting I see that it is possible to completely f*ck up your device to the point of needing a soldering iron” explains his dilemma one Reddit user. First of all there’s one thing to remember: “jailbreaking is super-safe”. “Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. In fact, anyone who thinks they’ve bricked their device with a jailbreak can send it to me. I can fix it unless it’s a hardware or a baseband thing” answered David Wang.

So what makes jailbreaking safer than rooting? PlanetBeing explained you’ve got Apple to thank for that. “Apple did a great job having a safe bootchain that extends all the way back to ROM. The bootrom always works no matter the software state of the device” the evad3rs’ member said. The bootrom is also the place where jailbreak developers look for exploits and no matter the bad state of the phone, from here “you can almost always bootstrap the restore process... and completely recover it”.

Also take into account that you can always go back to a restore version after a jailbreak that won’t mess up your Apple warranty. “...after a restore, no one can tell your iOS device had ever been jailbroken unless it phoned back home to Apple while it was jailbroken or you tried to do something to the baseband in order to unlock it” added David Wang.

Evad3rs’ PlanetBeing Talks about His Start with Jailbreaking

Evad3rs’ PlanetBeing
It didn’t take the jailbreak community several months to release the public jailbreak code for iPhone 5 because iOS6 was that much of a challenge. As Evad3rs PlanetBeing confessed, everybody “took a break for awhile”, so the actual search for vulnerabilities wasn’t exactly as lengthy as most iOS users believed.

In a quite candid Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Evad3rs’ Planetbeing talked about everything from his start with jailbreaking to the future of the practice and what it takes to become a jailbreak developer. Given the huge interest on Reddit and the overall appeal for the iOS 6 jailbreak not only in dedicated communities but all over the internet, Planetbeing aka David Wang just became one of the most popular names in the hacking world.

Many of the questions asked during the AMA session where linked to the beginning of Planetbeing’s career as an iOS jailbreaker. Users asked about background, motivation, training, job opportunities and plans for the future, sign that the whole iOS 6 jailbreak is now having people considering a new career.

“When I started, I had a lot of programming background and a passion for building my own programming projects in my spare time” David Wang said. “The exploitation stuff Apple really trained me in doing since they made each stage progressively harder” he added in response to an user’s questions about his experience with jailbreak development.

“I started on iOS when I bought an iOS device and it has remained fun throughout the years. I hacked on iOS because I owned one and I owned one because it was by far the best mobile platform in 2007” David Wang answered a Reddit user asking why he choose iOS over Android.

The developer explained Android does seem to have more vulnerabilities than iOS, but when it comes to safety issues between jailbreaking and rooting, the first is always certain. If Apple’s bootrom is insanely tight, when it comes to Android, “they don’t enforce any code signing [so] there’s less security to get around”.

iOS and Android Grab 92% of Smartphone Shipments in Last Year's Quarter

android and apple grab 90 % of smartphone marketlast year
Apple’s iOS and devices deliver top-notch design and technology at steep prices, whereas Android based smartphones are delivering more and more for an insanely appealing price tag. It’s a tight race, like never before, iOS and Android grabbing a whopping 92 percent of smartphone shipments in last year’s quarter.

A recent report by research firm Strategy Analytics revealed Android and iOS smartphones accounted for 92 percent of fourth quarter worldwide shipments.
Android might be a front runner too in the smartphone market, but at least for the moment, Apple’s iOS remains the predominant force, holding 70.1 percent of the smartphone market.

Whereas Apple remains the main force in the smartphone market, last year’s quarter shows there’s more and more interest with consumers for Android devices. Strategy Analytics’ report reads that there were 152 million Android devices sold in the fourth quarter, while Apple sold only 47.8 million iPhones.  It’s a staggering gap and it shows consumers are looking for cost-effective devices that offer quality tech and not necessary brand pride.

“Apple grew 29 percent annually and shipped 47.8 million smartphones worldwide for 22 percent marketshare in Q4 2013, dipping slightly from 24 percent a year earlier” explains Scott Bicheno, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics.  But Google’s Android is according to Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, the “undisputed volume leader” with a share of the global market that has surged to such an extent it has crushed “Symbian, Bada and other platforms in its wake”.

“The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs” Scott Bicheno has concluded. However for Android to keep growing at such an intense pace, the challenge is to make sure it crushes rising rivals early ahead.

For 2012 the volume of smartphone shipments has reached 700.1 million units, up almost by half compared to 2011, when the figure was at 490.5 million units.

Cellhelmet Provides Accidental Damage Coverage for iPhone

As expensive as an iPhone gets, the maintenance of its back panel and display isn’t exactly hassle-free. Even the newest iPhone 5 features a back panel that still scratches, but no worry there are a lot of cases to provide protection. Some deliver more than one perk, for instance Cellhelmet announced it provides accidental damage coverage for iPhone if the device breaks inside of the case.

/media/posts/4969-300x300.jpg
There is a huge market of accessories for iPhone smartphones, but all vary in terms of actual protection offered, price, durability and design. Cellhelmet is one of the few that seems to meet all requirements of a protection case for iPhone that delivers actual perks. Earlier this month, Cellhelmet announced it adds a new perk to the offer, providing accidental damage coverage for your device. And by the way, Cellhelmet protection case is now available for iPhone 5 too.

To be sure you are covered by Cellhelmet’s accidental damage coverage you have to register the case within 30 days of purchase. If your iPhone suffers damage while in the Cellhelmet case you will have to call the 24-hour claim number, and settle for a repair or a replacement. The company offers an unlimited number of repairs, but one replacement, at a $50 handling fee. It will take them about 3 business days to repair the device, and they even offer an over-nighted back at their expense if you need your iPhone that urgent.

Reviews for the Cellhelmet iPhone protection case produced by Cellpig agree this is a product that’s worth its price tag. Particularly when adding the accidental damage coverage feature to the offer. The protection case is 4.9 inches tall, 2.07 inches wide and 0.49 inch thick and is made of thick rubber. It doesn’t provide exceptional protection nor excellent design or functionality, but the accidental damage coverage is more than appealing.

The Cellhelmet case is priced at $49.99 for iPhone 5 and $44.99 for iPhone 4 and 4S.

Barclays Says iPhone 5 Costs only $215 to Produce

iphone 5 production cost
You’d imagine an expensive - premium smartphone like iPhone 5 features such pricey components they account for half its price. According to a Barclays report published earlier this month, iPhone 5 costs only $215 to produce.

The standard 16GB iPhone 5 is priced at $199 with a wireless service plan from AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, whereas the same standard 16GB iPhone 5, unlocked and contract free start selling at $649.00. It seems legit to pay three times the price of parts in the device, only to enjoy the perks of a factory unlocked contract-free iPhone. Barclays does add that the $215 price tag does not include the warranty cost, manufacturing cost, other components and logistics.

“We estimate that NAND Flash accounts for about 10 per cent of the total iPhone cost, wireless components account about 16 per cent and the display about 20 per cent of the total” reads the report released at the beginning of the month by Barclays. But the price to build iPhone 5 is likely even more affordable today than it was a month ago estimates the report.

The results of a preliminary teardown of iPhone 5 components concluded in September 2012 that the Bill of Materials (BOM) is only $168. Then an iSuppli report broke down all components in iPhone 5 by price and found out that the actual cost of building the hottest smartphone from Apple is in fact closer to $200.

“With the base model carrying a $199.00 BOM, the iPhone 5’s components are expected to be slightly more expensive compared to the iPhone 4S model” senior principal analyst Andrew Rassweiler estimated a few months ago. “The low-end iPhone 4S with the same memory density as the base-model iPhone 5 carried a BOM of $188.00, according to a preliminary estimate issued by IHS in October 2011” he added.

New Jailbreak Laws Adopted in 2013

Jailbreaks have been considered legal until now, but legal representatives plan to change the current situation by adopting new laws in 2013. Based on the reports published so far, jailbreaks could be possible only for certain types of devices, depending on the year they have been produced and the activities they can perform.
The subject was first discussed in 1998 when Digital Millennium Copyright addressed the Congress to prohibit owners to jailbreak their devices.

The Congress took the requests of the company into consideration, but allowed some exceptions, nonetheless. The rules have been subject to a new analysis and, according to the Congress, customers can freely jailbreak their smartphones. The only gadgets that cannot be jailbroken are PCs and tablets.

Smartphones owners, too, will have some limitations. Digital Millennium Copyright announced on Monday that only the smartphones that have been purchased before 2013 can be breached with the help of the hacking software. As expected, the decision has caused a lot of discontent among smartphone owners who were hoping to get full access on their devices.

The only solution they have is to jailbreak their phones before the laws are enacted. Reporters at the Associated Press have informed us that the legal framework will be modified at the beginning of the spring 2013. Until then, customers can freely jailbreak their smartphones, irrespective of the year they have bought them.

There are many teams of developers that are working to release jailbreaks for smartphones, tablets and PCs. If you want to be able to use your device at its full potential, you should download one of the hacking programs that work for your device, install them on your gadget and follow the steps that are presented therein. Make sure you protect your device both before and after the installation of the hacking software as the warranty will no longer be valid if your device gets broken during the process.

There is no need to worry about potential risks as numerous customers have jailbroken their devices without experiencing any problems. Nothing can go wrong as long as you follow the instructions provided by developers and you don’t install third-party apps. This is the best moment to breach the software of your device as you won’t experience any legal problems; once the new laws will be enacted, choosing to jailbreak your smartphone can be dangerous.

There were a lot of gadgets and accessories designed with iPhone 5 in mind, but Olloclip’s three-in-one lens caught our eye. Positive reviews only confirmed this is one iPhone 5 accessory any user should have.

Olloclip isn’t exactly new. It was released to improve photography skills of iPhone 4 and 4S, but it is the iPhone 5 and newest generation iPod touch version that is really thrilling. At only $69.99, Olloclip for iPhone 5 comes in white and black and has everything it needs, including a case, to convert an iPhone 5 into an actual camera. WalMart’s Straight Talk iPhone 5 Plan Isn’t Really Unlimited

Earlier this month, WalMart was making the headlines with an offer on iPhone 5 that seemed pretty hard to resist. Until a few days ago, when it turned out that WalMart’s Straight Talk iPhone 5 plan isn’t really unlimited.

By now, most consumers found out that any unlimited offer often seems too good to be true. Companies will often promise unlimited services, although there is a catch and there is definitely a cap, but since that’s not mentioned in plain sight, or oftentimes anywhere else, a lot of people fall prey to deceptive advertising. This seems to be the case for WalMart’s recent Straight Talk iPhone 5 unlimited plan.

WalMart introduced in the stores iPhone 5 with pre-paid Straight Talk Wireless, without a contract requirement at $45 per month. The offer promises unlimited talk, text and data for $45 or for $60 you get unlimited international calls to select countries on top of everything else. Straight Talk says this offer will save you around $950 a year, arguing that ‘customers shouldn’t have to choose between saving money and having the latest technology”.

“The advanced iPhone 5 with our unlimited $45 monthly plan and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSEWMT)’s $25 special financing offer is a marriage made in heaven – making it the most affordable premium smartphone offer in America” said F.J. Pollak, CEO and President TracFone Wireless.

But users and mobile experts took a second look at what seemed like a great deal. The unlimited plan is actually limited to a 2GB cap per month, which could be enough for most people, but it’s definitely not living to the promise in the selling pitch. And as PC Mag writes, if you’ve signed the deal before checking out their terms of service, you might find there are some restrictive surprises in there.

The unlimited Straight Talk iPhone 5 plan has the following restrictions: no app downloads from iTunes, no gaming and certainly no browsing the Internet through anything else than the Straight Talk Mobile Web Service. So, if we were to take into account statistics, the unlimited Walmart Straight Talk iPhone 4 plan limits 53 percent of smartphone users from streaming music.

By the way, even if you’re staying within that iPhone 5 unlimited cap, Straight Talk can still cut you down, just because you might “appear likely to generate...abnormally long average call lengths or Mobile Web Access and data usage as compared to the usage of other Straight Talk customers”.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Ordered To 4 Hours of Questioning over Poaching

tim cook apple ceo
It might have kept out of the headlines lately, but the civil lawsuit against Apple and other companies over poaching gets more and more interesting. Judge Lucy Koh ordered Apple CEO Tim Cook to 4 hours of questioning over the poaching case, as she tries to figure out whether the case will be granted the class action status.

During Thursday’s hearing in the poaching case Apple, Google and other tech companies are investigated, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ordered Apple CEO Tim Cook to four hours of questioning by plaintiff attorneys. Google’s own executive chairman, Eric Schmidt is likely going to get the same treatment by the end of next month, as the judge tries to ascertain if the poaching allegations will get class action status.

Apple and the rest of the companies involved in the civil lawsuit tried to make the poaching civil lawsuit disappear, but Judge Lucy Koh dismissed their request. During the Thursday hearing, the judge publicly criticized companies’ lawyers for not scheduling depositions of top executives earlier. Apple’s lawyers tried to argue that current CEO Tim Cook had nothing to do with the poaching agreement since it was before his time in this particular position.

“I find it hard to believe a COO would have no say over salary and compensation for all employees” the judge reacted, ordering Tim Cook to 4 hours of questioning.

Five former employees of tech companies filed a civil lawsuit against the top names in the IT industry today, including Apple and Google. The allegations claim that Apple, Google, Intel and several other such big companies have entered an agreement to eliminate competition for each other’s employees. Basically, in their agreement not to compete over each other’s employees Apple, Google, Intel, Pixar, Adobe, Intuit and Lucasfilm kept paycheck levels low and made sure their employees did not enjoy normal mobility in the labor market.

The no-hire poaching agreement Silicon Valley’s top companies have abided by over the past few years was the subject of a 2010 investigation by the Department of Justice. It was soon that all these companies announced they have entered an agreement to stop the poaching practice, but had not compensated the employees affected by their off-the-table deal. However, if Judge Lucy Koh decides the civil lawsuit stands ground to become a class action status, former employees could really rip the benefits of a more significant damage.

Apple Newsstand Users Get “Read Them Here First” Hearst Feature

Seeing as iPhone and iPad devices are so insanely popular, there’s always a plethora of rumors going around upcoming product. Staying ahead Apple is thrilling although reports make the wait time even more challenging. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published his predictions for Apple’s 2013 product roadmap and according to that report, Apple will release a Retina Display iPad Mini and an iPhone 5S with IGZO display.

Following KGI expert Ming-Chi Kuo’s predictions for Apple products could be the safest way to get a beforehand preview of the newest i-devices. For now at least, he is one of the few with a good track record with Apple predictions. In 2012, Ming-Chi Kuo accurately announced Apple’s fall releases, including some of the changes the company made to its products.

The analyst’s predictions estimate Apple will release new product in the third quarter, as well as an iPad mini with Retina Display and an iPhone 5s with an IGZO display and a fingerprint sensor integrated in the home button. The estimated upgrades are considered essential for Apple’s progress and reputation in the market as an innovator. Plus, these enhancements should address the current bugs and consumer reported caveats.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes all new products from Apple will be lighter and thinner, particularly if the company integrates the IGZO technology in iPhone 5S’ display. There are reports confirming Apple has been talking with Sharp, the IGZO inventor, while Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research believes a “technology shift is happening at Apple”.

Computer World writes that an IGZO display will be lighter and will have a lesser strain on the iPhone 5S’ battery. It’s also easier to be cut into different shapes, which could easily allow for innovative design, not to mention it performs well in large high-resolution, so the display quality can be enhanced significantly.

KGI Securities Expert Says iPhone 5S Features Fingerprint Sensor

The rumors about the release of iPhone 5S and a cheap iPhone this summer pile on as more and more analysts release their predictions for Apple’s products. KGI Securities expert Ming-Chi Kuo released earlier this week his product roadmap predictions for Apple’s product. Among the estimated improvements, the expert says iPhone 5S will feature a fingerprint sensor in the home button.

Looking at Apple’s recent moves, chances are Ming-Chi Kuo’s predictions will prove right. He has after all a good track record for predictions made relating to Apple’s product plans. The latest report he published reads that Apple is most likely to launch product in the third quarter of 2013, which will feature a bunch of improvements.

The iPhone model rumored to be launched this summer is said to be featuring several new enhancements, like a fingerprint sensor in the home button. Seeing as Apple bought the smart sensors maker AuthenTec in last July and since competition is already there, the analyst believes the inclusion of the fingerprint sensor is needed for the company to remain current in the market.

The fingerprint sensor would be the next big thing Apple could bring to the smartphone market, in an attempt to expand the gap between the other frontrunners in the business. And it’s a perk many users would definitely prefer, since it provides for much improved security and it also cuts the number of passwords and user names a user has to remember.

“In contrast, many Android and Windows Phone devices have more than one button below the display, and those buttons frequently lack the mechanical push of Apple’s home button” writes Ming-Chi Kuo. “As a result, attempts to integrate fingerprint scanning on competing devices would be less intuitive, and could frustrate users”.

There is also reason to think that with iPhone 5S Apple will integrate its branded payment service, which will be possible and safer thanks to the fingerprint sensor.

Future Doesn’t Lay In Cheap iPhone Says Apple Exec Phil Schiller

It’s been weeks now since the first rumor came out about Apple preparing to release a cheap iPhone, particularly designed for China, South America and Eastern Europe. It would be so cheap that it would definitely sky-rocket the company’s sales, yet Apple Marketing executive Phil Schiller says the future of the company doesn’t lay in cheap iPhones. In fact, that’s not what Apple does.

For the truly dedicated fan, Apple is a company that delivers only premium products, both in terms of tech specs and price. Even if the price tag isn’t exactly affordable, that still has many people saying Apple shouldn’t start producing low-cost devices. The Apple Marketing SVP recently reacted to the rumors, but he hasn’t exactly denied there is going to be a release of an iPhone that will cost around $150.

In an interview with Shanghai Evening News, Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller was asked if cheap devices are the company’s future. He denied the report that the company is developing a cheap iPhone just to “grab market share away” seeing as low-cost smartphones have been more and more appealing to buyers today. In fact, he did his job very well, reiterating that iPhone 5 is the best such device for Apple, whereas the company isn’t that interested in gaining more market share.

“We are not like other companies, launched multiple products in one breath, then pinning his hopes on a product to get the favor of consumers” Apple’s marketing SVP told Shanghai Evening News. “Competitors launched many dimensions new products, but after purchase will find no suitable software products and user experience” he added.

Yet, while that was true when Android first came out, for the moment competitors’ products and software potential is growing through the roof. Soon, iPhone’s best selling pitch won’t be the enormous number of apps available. Plus, Apple has been dipping its toe in new markets just to show it can, so it’s very likely people in China, Eastern Europe and South America will get the chance to buy a $150 iPhone.

“So a lot of people in the Chinese market using a functional machine, some manufacturers use cheap smartphones to replace feature phones, but this is not Apple’s product development direction” Apple exec Phil Schiller concluded.

What is Jailbreaking and What it Does for Your iPhone

Being an iPhone user, you must have heard many times about jailbreaking software. If you haven’t considered jailbreaking your iPhone 5,4S, 4, 3GS and so on, by now, it’s time to start asking questions and getting the answers. Many iPhone users miss out on amazing perks simply because they haven’t been informed about what jailbreaking is and what kind of benefits it can deliver.

What is iPhone Jailbreaking?

First of all, jailbreaking your iPhone isn’t the same as unlocking it. It does much more than that. By using jailbreaking software you can remove the limits Apple has set for your iPhone so you are able to install and use smartphone apps that aren’t listed in App Store. That means you can get content for free which your device can run even if you don’t have a copyright license for it. Basically, this delivers you full access to the entire system of the smartphone.

Is iPhone jailbreaking legal?

iPhone jailbreaking software and procedures were declared legal in 2012. During the recent update of regulations relating to this matter, iPhone jailbreaking is legal. However, Apple warns that jailbreaking your iOS devices will void your warranty. Restoring your device to the iTunes version and standard Apple settings will improve your chances of getting back your warranty.
Keep current with the legal status of jailbreaking iOS on our dedicated page.

Can I still use App Store and other services after an iPhone jailbreaking procedure?

Yes, yes you can. Jailbreaking your device doesn’t limit you. It opens a huge horizon for app use and entertainment. You will still be able to use App Store, iTunes and everything else, but you will be able to get themes, additional applications, content and extensions that aren’t available from these standard sources.
See what you can do with an iPhone after jailbreaking on the site’s dedicated section.

How do I perform an iPhone jailbreaking procedure?

To the layperson, jailbreaking an iPhone device might feel complicated. But it’s not more difficult than installing an app and all it takes is reliable jailbreak software and a step-by-step guide. Our website features numerous tutorials that explain how to jailbreak your iPhone based on the type of procedure used, iOS version as well as iPhone generation (5, 4S,4, 3GS, 3G, 1). There are two kinds of jailbreaking procedures for iPhone: tethered and untethered. Go to our tutorials’ page to find everything you need.

Should I jailbreak my iPhone?

Well, this is obviously up to you. Consider your average usage of your smartphone, think about how much you spend per month of content from App Store and iTunes, and think very hard about what you plan to do with your iPhone once it has been jailbroken.

Rumor Has It, iPhone 6 Will Be Released This Summer

A rumor about Apple releasing iPhone 6 this summer has caused a lot of buzz and for good reason. The company is said to release two models of the same iPhone, only that one of them will be cheaper and designer particularly to pertain to buyers in countries such as China, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

iPhone 5 hasn’t been released all that long. In fact, only three months after the release, the market is already flooding with rumors and insiders’ reports that Apple isn’t satisfied with how the buyers are reacting to iPhone 5. The latest news is that Apple is preparing to release iPhone 6 this summer, but with a twist. There’s going to be a cheaper model available, but not for the budget-seeking buyers in America, but for the markets where buyers have a lower level of revenue, like Latin America, China and Eastern Europe.
Most of these market rumors about Apple and its products were confirmed at a later date but the actual release of products such as iPad mini. So, there are actually chances that Apple is going to release two smartphones this year. But from the details offered by the reports so far, iPhone 6 won’t deliver that much innovation after all.

Some media sources are referring to the new iPhone in the report as iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S. It’s a bit confusing, but if Apple is going to release it, it’s likely going to be named iPhone 5S and here’s why. The iPhone that should be released this summer is going to feature a camera and a new display, with Super HD resolution, whereas the cheaper model could feature only 3G, since this is predominant in the targeted countries.

Analysts looked at the possibility that Apple will be releasing iPhone 6/ iPhone 5S this summer. First of all, it would definitely fall in line with Apple’s newest decision to release a new generation of devices every six months. Former Apple CEO John Sculley said that Apple is “going through a very significant change now in terms of product cycles” and “it’s really introducing products twice a year”.

Analyst Peter Misek estimates that iPhone 6 or iPhone 5s is going to feature a “new super HD camera/screen, a better battery, NFC” and possibly an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128 GB storage”.
