Volkswagen Launches iPhone 5 and App Full Integration with iBeetle Cabriolet

Well, it did take car makers long enough to finally integrate the iPhone experience in their cars. Last Friday, Volkswagen launched the iBeetle Cabriolet with iPhone 5 full integration and app at an auto show in Shanghai, China.

Later this month, between 20th to 29th of April, at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, Volkswagen will introduce its first car that provides a full integration of iPhone 5. The iBeetle will be available in two models, Coupe and Convertible and will feature a docking station that transforms the iPhone in a fully functional on-board instrument. Both cars will be launched early 2014.

“Two iconic products will form an alliance later this year: the iPhone from Apple, and the Beetle from Volkswagen” reads the press release from Volkswagen. “The iPhone will interface with the Beetle and Beetle Convertible via a specially developed app and a docking station” making the iBeetle Cabriolet “the first model line from the Volkswagen Group in which the iPhone will become an integrated component”.

Even the colors and gear in the iBeetle were designed to be compatible with the iPhone’s design. Or at least, that’s what the press release reads. “The colors and equipment features of the iBeetle are stylistically linked to the Cupertino-based US company, bringing its iconic smartphones into harmony with what is certainly one of the world’s most iconic automotive designs” promises Volkswagen.

The iBeetle iPhone 5 app, called Volkswagen Car Net The Beetle, gives drivers and smartphone users easy access to several drive modes, seven to be more exact: Expert, Reader, Trainer, Postcard, Photos, Post and Milestone. It also gives them access to Spotify, allowing them to stream media into the iBeetle.

The seven different driving modes include several features. For instance, the Expert mode adds five functions to your iPhone 5 that transform it in an on-board instrument that makes it possible to measure lateral acceleration and coolant and oil temperatures for the car’s engine. The Trainer mode gives the user the ability to look at different driving times, distances and see which is more economic in terms of consumption.
