One of the first questions iPhone users ask before or after
performing a jailbreak process pertains to Siri. Many want to know if
they can still use Siri on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch and the
good news for those still running 5.0 and 5.0.1 and earlier is that the
tweak for it is quite hassle-free to install and use. The solution to
install Siri on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch is known as Spire.
Spiri
is a new hack for jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to
run Siri, the voice assistant. The hack is compatible with jailbroken
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPod Touch 4th
generation and iPad 1. Created by Ryan Petrich and Chpwn, this hack will
allow you to enter your own proxy server address to obtain files
required by Apple to grant you the authorization to use Siri.
The
Siri hack “uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so
it doesn’t have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts”.
Cpwn, the developer, explains that the app directs “all traffic through
a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire
allows you to specify your own proxy server”.
To install Siri on
your jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch you need to get a proxy. Chpwn has
provided several ideas on how to do that, including owning an iPhone 4S
or using a friend’s authentication tokens for iPhone 4S.
Another
solution if you want a voice assistant like Siri on your jailbroken
device is to replace Siri and try a similar service like Google Chrome’s
speech API via the tweaks  NowNow or Activoice. This is also the case
if you’re running a more recent iOS firmware such as 5.1 or 6.x.
Spiri, the hack for Siri is available for free in the Cydia app store and takes only 100 MB.
